The Writing Journey

Writing is a journey, not a destination. It has been a winding path fueled by determination. This is not just about the words on a page; it’s about portraying complex female experiences.
Finding My Voice
When I first sat down to write, I wasn’t sure what would happen. I doubted whether I had a novel in me, or if I was a good enough writer. Who was I to think I could do this? There were nine abandoned manuscripts before Broken Trad Wife was born. One particularly hormonal day, I wrote a rant about feeling lost in motherhood. This rant became the root of Elizabeth. She was someone whom I needed to write. As I wrote, the genre came. Women’s fiction became my compass. The genre rules encouraged me to explore the layers of identity and resilience.
One practical step that helped me was keeping a daily journal. It wasn’t about perfect prose but about capturing moments, emotions, and ideas as they came. This habit became a wellspring of inspiration and a way to practice honesty in my writing.
The Role of Place in My Stories
Mexico’s rich history and diverse landscapes have always fascinated me. In Broken Trad Wife, it provides a mysterious backdrop. Based on my time living in Oaxaca, Mexico, actual places inspired me. I hope this helps readers feel connected to the narrative. It’s like inviting them to walk alongside the Elizabeth, to breathe the same air, slide their feet in the mud.
Navigating the Publishing World as a Canadian Author
Breaking into the publishing world feels increasingly daunting. I’m trying to avoid stats and focus on the things I can control. But persistence is key. I’ve learned that building relationships with fellow writers can be as important as working on the words. Thank you Jericho Writer’s and Victoria Writer’s for being my community.
One of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned is to embrace rejection as part of the process. Every ‘no’ is a step closer to ‘yes.’ It’s easy to take rejection personally, but I remind myself that it’s not about me it’s about this work I’ve created and whether it is its time.
Looking Ahead: The Path Forward
As I continue to write and grow, I’m filled with hope and curiosity. The writing journey is never truly finished. There are always new stories to tell and new voices to explore.
I want to keep pushing boundaries, both in content and form. To write stories that resonate, comfort, and challenge. To be a part of a literary tradition that values diversity and honesty.
